About the Irish Christian Brothers

The Congregation of Christian Brothers, also known as the Christian Brothers and the Irish Christian Brothers, was founded in 1802 by Blessed Edmund Rice in Waterford, Ireland. This religious community is currently headquartered in Rome where its Congregation Leadership Team is based, although it has influence throughout the world. In comparison to other religious orders, the Christian Brothers are believed to be relatively small and currently only consists of 250 brothers that make up the North American province. In America, the influence of the Christian Brothers is largely felt across the nation. Previously, the North American Province owned and operated more than a dozen schools; however, it still is seen in many schools that it staffs, including:

  • Iona College
  • Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School
  • Saint John Neumann High School
  • Brother Rice High School
  • Saint Laurence High School
  • Christian Brothers College High School
  • Bergen Catholic High School
  • Bishop Kearney High School
  • Cardinal Hayes High School
  • O'Dea High School

Sexual Abuse Scandal with the Christian Brothers

At the tail end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the order suffered a substantial blow to their reputation as widespread abuse (including sexual, physical and emotional) of children who had been under the congregation's care became publicized. This has led to many sexual abuse claims being laid against the order - eventually resulting in the order filing for bankruptcy. At Manly & Stewart, we are here to represent those who have found themselves harmed by actions of the Irish Christian Brothers and will do everything that we can to ensure that our clients are fully protected. Some of the issues that a clergy abuse lawyer from our firm will be able to assist clients with include, but are not limited to, the following:
